And I'm Billy Galligan. And today we're covering the game that every player in it would rather not be playing.

The third-place play-off. England versus France. The consolation prize nobody asked for.

Look, I'll be honest. No player goes to a World Cup dreaming of the bronze medal. You don't picture yourself lifting the third-place trophy as a kid kicking a ball around in the back garden. It's the game that exists because FIFA needs something to fill a Saturday.

And yet. There are reasons to watch. There are stories worth telling. So let's tell them.

First and most importantly — Didier Deschamps. The France manager is leaving after this game after years of extraordinary service. He took France to a World Cup final in 2018, won it. He took them to a final in 2022, nearly won it. He took them to a semi-final in 2026 before Spain ended the dream. This is his last game in charge of Les Bleus.

Whatever you think of his sometimes cautious style of football, the man's record speaks for itself. And he deserves a send-off with a win. Whether France give him one is another matter.

And then there's Kane. Harry Kane — England's record World Cup scorer with thirteen goals in total. Six in this tournament. Could he add to that tally against France and sign off his 2026 campaign with one more record-breaking moment?

Bellingham too — six goals, two of them against Norway in that extraordinary quarter final. A player who has grown into this tournament and will be one of the names people talk about for years.

And Dembélé on the French side — six goals of his own. All three of them chasing Messi and Mbappé in the golden boot race but needing a miracle at this stage to catch either of them.

Which brings us to the real subplot of this game. The golden boot. Messi on nine goals, Mbappé on nine goals, Messi ahead on assists. Mbappé plays today. Messi plays tomorrow. Every goal Mbappé scores today changes the stakes for Sunday.

If Mbappé scores twice today and Messi doesn't score in the final — Mbappé wins the golden boot. If Messi scores in the final and Mbappé doesn't score today — Messi wins it. The third-place play-off suddenly matters in a way nobody expected.

The golden boot race being decided across two different games on two different days. Only football could arrange something like that.

As for the game itself — England will want to end the tournament on a positive note after that heartbreaking semi-final loss to Argentina. France will want to send Deschamps out with a win. Both teams have players who want one more moment in this tournament.

It won't be a classic. These games rarely are. The legs are tired, the hearts are heavier, and the prize doesn't quite justify the effort required.

But someone will win it. Someone will score. And somewhere in amongst the footnotes of this World Cup, this game will have its own small story to tell.

The game no one wants to play in. But someone has to.
